Eye To The Hills

A Scotsman’s Memories of an Outdoor Life

Campbell Steven

Campbell Steven, born in Helensburgh before World War One, tells of his early days growing up in Scotland, of his education (plus competitive golf) at Oxford, and then of his World War Two service in the ski battalion raised to fight in Finland and time spent in the Commandos as a climbing instructor and in small boat reconaissances. In later life Mr Steven took to writing on subjects dear to his heart: hill-walking, mountaineering, bird-watching and island-going. For many years he contributed regular monthly columns to Scottish Field. His gift for detailed description and sense of humour make his story a fascinating read. This collection of episodes in Campbell Steven’s long and active life is full of gems, and is sure to appeal to anyone with an interest in Scotland and the great outdoors.
