The Illustrated
History of Bradford’s Suburbs
Michael Birdsall, Gina Szekely and
Peter Walker
Bradford grew swiftly around the turn of the 20th
century. Within a few generations, small villages
on the periphery were absorbed by the city’s
expansion – by new industry, new housing, civic
buildings and roads. The authors show how these villages
retained their identity and how their names have lived
on in the urban areas that surround the centre. Recalled
are the origins and development of districts as diverse
as Idle, Eccleshill, Undercliffe, Laisterdyke, Lidget
Green, Crossley Hall, Allerton and Shipley.
