Days of
Iron
The Story of West Ham United in the
Fifties
Brian Belton
In 1958 West Ham emerged from a 26-year hibernation
outside top-flight football, storming back as Second
Division champions with 101 goals. In their second
game back they beat mighty Wolves, the eventual champions,
and in the same month overpowered Manchester United,
who would be runners-up. In the spring of 1959 they
shook fortress Highbury with a glorious 2-1 victory
over the team that would take third place.
Throughout a decade when the East of London still
struggled to shake off the wreckage of Wordl War Two,
manager Ted Fenton built a formidable team, which
included the likes of Bobby Moore, Geoff Hurst, Ernie
Greory and Vic Keeble.
This is a story of that wonderful decade through
the eyes of those who played – the story of
West Ham's Days of Iron.
