The Illustrated
History of Manchester’s Suburbs
Glynis Cooper
This fine selction of photographs from the Manchester
Central Library collection shows how in the course
of the last 150 years, the outskirts of the city have
expanded in a way that would astonish Mancunians of
just a few generations ago. It records the impact
made on the city by the textile industry and, in particular,
it recalls the explosion of trade, technology and
population that resulted in the urbanization of the
countryside as well as the relentless expansion that
created new communities and absorbed the old.
